I have been looking at black males for a year or so now, and happened to notice that Northwest Alpacas had one for sale. Satchmo does have registered offspring, but has gotten no breedings since living there because of their focus on Studmaster males. But they have many many high quality males that end up going to fiber homes. I really didn't want to buy a mature male, and they didn't want him going to a fiber home, so they made me a deal I couldn't pass up. I am now leasing Satchmo in a pilot program for Northwest Alpacas.
Satchmo is out of a black female, described as having the kind of fiber breeders of black should be breeding for by Dr Anthony Stachowski. His sire is Silverado, one of the most prolific silver males imported from Peru, also by Dr. Stachowski. Satch has 7 registered offspring - 4 of which are black.
His fiber isn't the finest, he is the beginning of a long term plan I have to add black to my herd. His 2007 fiber stats, obtained by Northwest Alpacas, were AFD of 36 and SD of 7.6. Staple length was 75 cm. Pretty average for an older black male - if you can find those numbers published anywhere.
His conformation is spot-on. Great bone, lovely headpiece, compact square body, high libido. His fiber has areas of grey throughout.
